More and more evidence is coming to light (through research and studies) showing that sugar is the primary factor in causing not just obesity, but many other chronic and lethal health issues.

Consumed refined and added sugar causes our blood sugar levels to become unbalanced, our body perceives this as mismanaged blood sugar which triggers the body into a ‘stress state’, and yes, I mean a full-on cortisol (the stress hormone) and adrenaline spike.

It disrupts our hormonal balance triggering many nasty health conditions like: weight gain and difficulty losing weight, acne, fatigue, sleep disorders, irregular periods, fertility issues, depression, difficulty concentrating, irritability, moods swings. 

It creates insulin resistance, when this happens your fat, liver cells and muscles, don’t respond properly when you ingest sugar leaving excess glucose in your blood which lead to scary conditions like obesity, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

Evidence is mounting that refined and added sugar is the cause for most cancers because of its disruptive effect on the entire body leading it to become constantly stressed and inflamed.

Also a recent study found that SUGAR FEEDS the GROWTH of CANCER cells, pretty scary to think about, especially due to the dependence sugar quickly creates for even more sugar.

It leads to liver problems.

Too much refined sugar and high-fructose corn syrup causes a fatty buildup that can lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis: in other words studies have even shown that sugar can be as damaging to the liver as alcohol, even if you're not overweight.

Consuming too much sugar causes leptin resistance. Leptin is a very crucial hormone that lets your mind know when you’ve eaten enough, but if you have leptin resistance, your hormone becomes suppressed. So, you overeat because you have no idea how full you are.

Sugar is SOOO Addictive. Sugar is even more addictive than cocaine.

A study in 2007 found that 94% of rats tested would rather choose artificially sweetened water over cocaine (after being sensitized to the drug). Just think about that for a second!

Most importantly for you to know is that I’m a recovering sugar-addict, and now a passionate advocate for sugar balanced living.

For many, many years I suffered with a chronic sugar addiction, which, honestly I didn’t take seriously. I just put it down to having a sweet tooth.

And no wonder at it because when talking about sugar, everyone loves to say things like:

‘It’s just a little sugar what’s the big deal- it’s not gonna kill you!’

‘What’s the problem- it’s calorie free?’, or ‘…it’s organic?’

‘It’s not sugar that’s the problem, it’s that you’re greedy.’

None of these sugar myths helped me. 

In fact, I was so out of whack that after completing a challenging workout, I would ‘treat’ myself as a reward to something sweet.

I also didn’t understand at the time that my cravings for a big bowl of pasta, or a plate of delicious bread (because who could stop at one bite?!) was my brain craving the glucose that is processed from the carbs.

Every day I woke up with terrible aches, pains, and painful cramping. 

I broke out in acne, had weight fluctuations, and was constantly in a state of inflammation. As for my mental state, I literally couldn’t have ice-cream in the house. The thought of it would consume me, until I gave in and tucked-in to it.

I would find every excuse to have sugar- to celebrate, to pick-me up if I was tired, to feel cozy watching a favorite film, if I felt nervous, upset… you get the picture.

I was in a constant cycle of sugar cravings and binges, cutting it out for a couple of days, and then binging again. 

This of course made me feel even worse, and my confidence was crushed. Things got worse.

I became sick more often, and got injured during exercise more often. I hurt my ankle tendon so badly I still struggle with it today.

My allergies intensified and became something that I had to live with every day.

It triggered a chronic hormone imbalance- particularly estrogen, progesterone which caused all sorts of other ‘women’s’ health issues which were very scary. 

I had problems getting to, and staying asleep, except in the morning when I felt groggy and had trouble waking up.

I constantly suffered fatigue, and huge dips in energy through-out the day.

It got to the point that I had forgotten what it felt like to wake up and feel good.

Here I was in my teens and I felt like an unfit 90-year-old, and my family were pleading with me to stop listening to my inner critic, and to look inside myself, to the root of the trigger and problem: my wake-up call to take better care of myself.

I was at the point of no return.

I hit the internet and went on an epic Google self-diagnosis search, and discovered that my sugar obsession was literally making me sick.

I was shocked at how poisonous sugar actually was for the body; it was mind-blowing that science quite clearly show that sugar feeds cancer. I was simply just ignorant to the bitter truth about it, and sadly most of us are.

What made it worse was how food and beverage manufacturers were adding processed sugar to every kind of food, and they were going to great lengths to deceive people on their product labels. 

I set about working on my diet, carefully weeding out the hidden sugars, committing to a super-healthy eating plan and doing a sugar and junk-food detox.

But here’s the thing. I would find myself keeping to my plan for several days, sometimes even as long as two weeks, but then I would hit a bump and the craving would feel overwhelming --
